According to Town & Country Trump bought the sprawling Florida estate Mar a Lago (sea to lake) from Post Cereals heiress Marjorie Merriweather for the relative bargain price of $5 million in 1985, and paid an additional $3 million for antiques and furniture. In September 2019, Donald Trump and the First Lady changed their primary residence from Manhattan to Palm Beach, where, presumably, he could pay lower taxes—and feel more welcome.

When Donald Trump opened Mar-a-Lago, he welcomed Jewish members, African-Americans, and gay couples, who had been prohibited from joining other Palm Beach clubs. Club members reportedly used to pay a $100,000 initiation fee and annual dues of $14,000. After becoming the president of the United States the initiation fee went up to $200,000.
